Meet Leah Ingram, Bill Behre, and daughters Jane, 13, and Annie, 11. They walk most everywhere, they rarely eat out, they sometimes buy clothing at consignment shops, and they turn the lights off when they leave a room. Theirs is no hard-luck-in-a-recession story. The Ingram-Behre family is solidly middle-class, fully employed, and not especially threatened by the conniptions gripping Wall Street. Behre, 43, is a dean at the College of New Jersey, while Ingram, 42, is a successful freelance writer and etiquette expert. They have no credit card debt. Thats now. A little more than a year ago, the family was ensnared in Americas consume-at-all-costs culture. During the days of soaring home prices and easy credit, they took out a $101,000 home-equity loan on a previous house and spent lavishly on a lifestyle upgrade. Learn how they became debt-free and what frugal living is like.

Do you want to experience the “more” of life while creating a satisfying and prosperous life?

Joan Sotkin, founder of Prosperity Place® has spent the past 30 years examining alternative ways of dealing with life on many different levels. She doesn’t believe that it is possible to separate career and/or business development from personal growth because who we are expresses itself through whatever we do.
“Defining success as merely making a lot of money and having social or career status has never made sense to me.” Joan Sotkin
The result of her search for physical, emotional, spiritual and financial comfort can be found in the pages of her website.
In this episode of Breaking Through, Joan will give you some tools to “Build Your Money Muscles” (as her new book is called.)

January 05, 2010 – 8PM EST

Breaking Through with Georgiann - Interview with Ardy Skinner

Click the play button above to listen to the show!

Ardy Skinner knows, through personal experience, how to weather the economic storm and come out on top. She’s a Lavish Cheapskate, a new breed of cheapskate that has accomplished “lavish liberation” by using more ingenuity than money, more passion than experience, and more focused mindset than mainstream financial investing. And in her new book, The Lavish Cheapskate, Everyday Strategies to Free Up Money and Recession-Proof Your Life, Skinner helps people from all walks of life launch and build a recession-proof life which leads to liberation, one case-scenario comparison at a time (with hard numbers to show the outcome).

“A tough economy is a blessing for your personal financial mindset. Having a limited income forces you to become conscious of everyday spending and to become acutely aware of what money is for. That’s where the true meaning of money emerges; the perception that is the foundation to personal success in all areas of life.”

Skinner adds that in an uncertain economy, double-income families are at unusually high risk, because knowing their bare-minimum isn’t on their agenda. And when the economy turns around again, it is the Lavish Cheapskates that will become more successful by maintaining these daily principles.”

Packed with practical advice straight from the trenches, The Lavish Cheapskate is a do-it-now guide to recession proof your life, even if you’re at the threat of losing a job. In her book, Skinner defies conventional methods, citing that the “coupon-savings plan” in the grocery store is a “waste of time and money” and calls them “spending stimulation tickets.” She explains how any household can free up more money by abandoning them—and leveraging that money to recession-proof life.

“It’s not rocket science, but there are so many misconceptions about how to save a buck, and many people get stuck in a ‘Poor-Rich Person’s Lifestyle’ by attempting to follow suggestions on how to save. This is due to the inundation of messages to stimulate spending,” says Skinner. “I’m here to tell them that they can absolutely accomplish a recession-proof life, just like I have, and it’s simple. More than that, NOW is the time. We are amidst a sense of urgency due to all time highs in unemployment and the onset of inflation. And if you are already savvy at saving money, it’s time to blast it into high speed.”

About Ardy Skinner

Author of The Lavish Cheapskate, Everyday Strategies to Free Up Money and Recession-Proof Your Life, Ardy Skinner, a single mother, went from over $77,000.00 in credit-card debt alone, to becoming debt free. She ventured into buying a home, buying real estate outside her home (which is paid for), and had enough money in her “Paycheck Extension Account” to live for more than a year without working a single minute. On January 5th, 2009 she was laid off. Instead of panicking, she had a liberation most every American only dreams of having. By emerging from a former life as a “Poor-Rich Person” to becoming a “Lavish Cheapskate,” Skinner was able to face a layoff and say, “Thank you! I think I’ll write a book showing others how to have this kind of liberation!”

That’s now. A little more than a year ago, the family was ensnared in America’s consume-at-all-costs culture. During the days of soaring home prices and easy credit, they took out a $101,000 home-equity loan on a previous house and spent lavishly on a lifestyle upgrade.

Listen to the show and learn how they became debt-free and what frugal living is like.
